Panel Work - Switchboard

Below is a photograph of my Switchboard.

This picture shows initial mountings and basic layouts of my switchboard, alot of components are still missing. (please notes, this picture was taken during the insulation resistance testing, therefore the MEN link is missing from the picture.)

Introduction - My Wiring World & Myself

My name is Zhiheng Luo, I came from China. I came to New Zealand about 13 years ago. I really enjoy working on the electrical industrial works, So last year I've decided to do this electrical trade course at Unitec.

Throughout these two semesters, I've learn alot about electricity. The most important concept I've learn about electricity is SAFE. In this course I've learn how to wire a domestic electricity system.

In the following posts, you will see the my panel board work at Unitec.

Completing certificate of compliance

Certificate of compliance was the last thing we did in this course. John taught us how to write up the CoC for our panel board at the last day of the semester. I found it pretty easy and straight forward.

Completing test sheets

I found completing the test sheets for my panel boards and outside frame to be one of the most challenging part of this course. It was difficult to understand the testing methods, but it started to clear up once I get my hand onto the testing.

Conduit work

The only opportunity we had on conduit work was working on our panel board at the start of the semester, we had to fit a set of conduit to cover the HWC and motor conductors. But later in the semester, John told us to remove the conduit off our panel board.

Completing Cable Joints

We did a cable jointing practical with John in class.

Testing Lights

Our group of the class did not do any practical on fluorescent light, but fortunately we had the opportunity to work on this in Motor/Machine Class with Dawid.

We connected up a fluorescent light, we follow through the normal testing procedures before we liven it up.

Testing 3 phase board

Because our group of the class was behind schedule, most of the students in our group did not had the opportunity to do testing on the 3 phase board.

But fortunately, Chris, Dong and I had completed our panel board early, and we had a little bit of time left, so we've decided to go work on the testing 3 phase board together.

At the end, we completed it and found the 3 phase board was full of faults. All our testing results are written on our work book.

Completing outside frames

I had to complete this part of the course (outside frames) with the other group of the class. From this exercise, I get the taste of what real life house wiring is all about. After wiring the outside frames, we also had to complete all the testing in a group, before we liven it up.

At the end of the day, we managed to get our outside frames working and we had it liven up. Martin was there to witness this moment of success.

Completing panel boards

Completing the panel board was the primary goal for this semester, our class was behind schedule throughout this whole period, but I finally managed to complete my panel board 4 weeks before the end of this semester.

I've learned alot from working on my panel board about domestic wiring/switchboard installation.

It was a great learning experience.

Test 2 - Regulations

This is the most recent test for wiring and regulations course. It is also the last test for this course. It is based on Regulations. I found it fairly easy also.

I have obtained good mark in this test.

Test 1 - Max demand and cable size

This was the first test we had on wiring and regulations course. It was based on calculating maximum demand and finding the right size of cable based on maximum current load and voltage drop.

I found this test to be fairly simple, and I have obtained quite a good mark on this test.
